ARCHAEOBOTANICAL LABORATORY

The Archaeobotanical Laboratory of the Department of Archaeology and Museology is part of the Centre for Analytical and Experimental Archaeology at Panská Lhota, which offers the necessary background for flotation of archaeological material and a complete preparation of samples for the archaeobotanical analysis.

The Archaeobotanical Laboratory of the Department of Archaeology and Museology provides for following analytical services:

  • Flotation of archaeological deposits for preparation of archaeobotanical samples
  • Drying of archaeobotanical material
  • Sampling and documentation of archaeobotanical material
  • Basic analysis of archaeobotanical material

Sampling and documentation

Primary processing of archaeobotanical material – comprises inventorying of macroremains and their preparation for permanent storage, including the creation of comparative samples.

Flotation

Flotation of archaeological material with the aim to acquire archaeobotanical samples is carried out in a flotation unit including sieves of various mesh size. The acquired macroremains are dried in a dryer.

Basic analysis of archaeobotanical material

Basic archaeobotanical analysis of the acquired material extended by basic archaeological analysis of the role of archaeobotanical remains in particular archaeological contexts – determination and photographic documentation. The analysis and documentation are made using a stereoscopic microscope (BMS).
